A telephone call has been made, and an email sent, purporting to be from a genuine law firm.
What is the scam?
The SRA understands that a telephone call has been made and an email sent to a member of the public, purporting to be from a genuine firm of solicitors (see details below).
The email was sent from the email address 'newsouthlaw.recovery@slg.newsouthlaw.co.uk' and the calls were made from the telephone number '07908 669 643'.
Any business or transaction through the email address or contact number referred to above are not undertaken by an individual or firm regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called New South Law Limited (SRA ID 645781). The genuine email domain of the firm is @newsouthlaw.co.uk and the telephone number is 01903931043.
The genuine firm has confirmed that the email address newsouthlaw.recovery@flg.newsouthlaw.co.uk is the genuine email (please note the difference of '@flg').
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
