SQE exemptions

The drop-down list below shows the qualifications we have looked at for an SQE2 exemption. There is also information on the requirements you must meet for an SQE1 exemption.

You cannot apply for an exemption from an SQE assessment you have failed or are waiting results from.

If you have failed, you will have to resit and pass the assessment to be eligible for admission. This is because we consider this to be clear evidence that you have not met the standard required to practise as a solicitor of England and Wales.

Even after the six-year reset period, any failed attempts will still stay on your record.

What is an SQE exemption

When a qualified lawyer does not have to sit one or more of the SQE assessments. You can apply for an exemption from either SQE1 and/or SQE2.

Who can apply

SQE exemptions are only available to qualified lawyers. This is someone who holds a professional legal qualification which confers rights to practise in England and Wales or in another jurisdiction in the UK or abroad.

Who cannot apply

You cannot apply for an exemption from any part of the SQE that you have failed or are still waiting for your results from. If you fail, you must retake the relevant assessment and pass to be eligible to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales.

Qualification not on the list

If your jurisdiction or qualification is not on the list, this means we have not had an application for that qualification or may be currently considering one. However, you can still make an individual SQE2 application.
