Letters have been sent in relation to a defamation accusation, falsely claiming to be from 'Thomas Boland' of Blain Boland & Co.
What is the scam?
The SRA has seen letters which have been sent to an organisation in relation to a defamation matter purporting to be from a genuine law firm (see details below.)
The letters seen by the SRA misuse the genuine firm's logo at the top of their letter. The letter also includes the following email address 'thomas.boland@boland-law.com' and along with a telephone number of '07424 945664'.
Any business or transaction through an individual called 'Thomas Boland', the email address 'thomas.boland@boland-law.com', or the telephone number '07424 945664' is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Blain Boland and Thomas Limited trading as Blain Boland & Co (SRA ID 485860). The genuine firm uses the email domain '@blainboland.co.uk', and its genuine telephone number is '0151 355 2645'.
It is our understanding that the firm has no connection to the letter referred to in the above alert, and that the firm does not employ an individual called 'Thomas Boland'.
The SRA does not authorise or regulate a solicitor called 'Thomas Boland'.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
